Understanding the stages of reading development can help ease your frustration when you are worried about your child not doing something his or her peers have already mastered.  For children with dyslexia, the growth through the different stages can take much longer than the typically developed child.

You’ve heard the argument: handwriting is over. It’s keyboarding skills all the way. Not so fast. Of course, our students need strong keyboarding and tech skills but handwriting has benefits and creates brain connections that can’t be easily replaced. Part of our dyslexia therapy program includes a small lesson on the history of the English language.  This is especially important for children with dyslexia because our language is so confusing.  We are primarily influenced by the  Anglo-Saxon, Greek, Latin and French languages.

In the maintenance phase of therapy, we work through a program called Word Detective: Discovering the History of the English Language.  This reviews our reading and spelling rules, and delves deeper into our history to form a stronger connection to our words.

The most important date that I was tested on over and over in my studies, was the Norman Conquest in 1066.  A wonderful STA parent sent this to me, and I wanted to share!  Thank you!

Very Interesting!

I had just returned from the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) annual conference, which was excellent. One of the talks I attended was on the topic of the use of Vision Therapy (VT) as a treatment for dyslexia. That same day I had a question from a parent on VT pop into my DyslexiaHelp in-box.
